About Dan

Background & Approach

I’ve been practicing Tai Chi, Qigong, Kung Fu, and martial arts for more than 15 years, and I’ve been teaching since 2016.

I’m also a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and positive psychology coach, which shapes the way I teach. I’ve seen how mindful movement can support not only physical health, but also emotional well-being, resilience, body awareness, and a greater sense of calm.

To me, Tai Chi is meditation in motion — practical, grounding, and deeply helpful for modern life.

My teaching style is calm, step-by-step, and beginner-friendly. I especially enjoy helping people who feel stiff, unsteady, stressed, or unsure where to start. Whether you are brand new to Tai Chi or returning after time away, you are welcome here.

Tai Chi & Qigong Training

I’m a certified instructor in Wudang Yang Style Tai Chi and Qigong through 9 Dragons Healing Arts, where I completed the Certified Instructor Training program under Master Trainer Simu Tamara Kaneen.

This training included:

  • 108 Wudang/Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan
  • Five Element Qigong
  • Six Healing Sounds
  • Five Animal Frolics
  • 8 Pieces of Brocade
  • Standing Qigong
  • Baguazhang
  • Turning Spinning Qigong

I also studied traditional Yang Style Tai Chi for more than 10 years with Sifu Franklin Wood, founder of the School of Tao Chi. His teaching deepened my appreciation for Tai Chi as both a traditional internal art and a practical path for health, awareness, and personal growth.

Additional Health-Focused Tai Chi Training

To better support beginners, older adults, and students interested in balance and mobility, I have also completed training in Sun Style Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention.

This approach emphasizes gentle movement, upright posture, smaller steps, smooth weight shifting, and safe progression. It fits well with the way I teach: slowly, clearly, and with respect for each student’s comfort level.

This training supports my focus on:

  • Balance and steadiness
  • Gentle mobility
  • Safe weight shifting
  • Relaxed posture
  • Breath and body awareness
  • Confidence in everyday movement
  • Chair-supported options when helpful
  • A calm, non-intimidating learning environment

Martial Arts Background

I also trained in Southern Style Kung Fu under Master Trainer Sifu Michael Kaneen, earning Purple Belt – 4th Stripe.

This training included:

  • Hung Gar 108 Five Animal Tiger Crane
  • Fu Jow Pai / Black Tiger Claw
  • Five Animal Combination
  • Individual forms in line boxing
  • 108 Wooden Man Form
  • 108 Body Opponent Bag striking techniques

While my current public classes focus on gentle Tai Chi and Qigong for health, balance, mobility, and stress relief, my broader martial arts background gives me a deep respect for posture, alignment, coordination, grounding, and mindful movement.

How Dan Teaches

In class, I bring together traditional Tai Chi training, Qigong, health-focused Tai Chi methods, mindfulness, and a calm counseling-informed teaching style.

Students can expect:

  • Clear step-by-step instruction
  • A gentle pace
  • No pressure to keep up
  • Chair or wall support when helpful
  • Respect for individual comfort levels
  • A welcoming environment for true beginners
  • Practical movements that can support everyday confidence

The goal is not performance or perfection.

The goal is to help you feel more steady, more relaxed, and more at home in your body.
